We find ourselves in a polarized world, where disputes, disagreements, divisions, and even conflicts have become increasingly evident within the Church, the “one” body of Christ. While differing perspectives and divisions pose challenges, history shows that Christians have frequently persecuted one another over these very issues. My mission is to illuminate a pathway for pastors, Christian educators, community builders, and ministry leaders to promote unity and foster strong relationships among the community of believers. This can be achieved by rediscovering the profound significance of the Lord’s Supper, both within local churches and among Christ’s believers worldwide.

 

The Church has long wrestled with its history of discord, and a prominent example of this is the Lord’s Supper. Instituted by Jesus, this significant ritual has often become, over the centuries, a source of division rather than a catalyst for unity. It is important to point out the differing views that illuminate these divides. As noted by Gordon Smith (2008), there are five major traditional interpretations of the Lord’s Supper, along with numerous minor interpretations. Amid this array of perspectives, one vital element of this 2000-year-old ritual is frequently overlooked. This book aims to underscore the importance of the Lord’s Supper by reflecting on the time of creation, tracing the narrative of God’s people, and exploring Jesus’s institution of the ritual. What significance does a meal, created by God, carry? What do a piece of bread and a cup of drink symbolize in the relationship between God and humanity? In what ways does the practice of communion strengthen our connections with God and with one another?

 

As a missionary and pastor with over 30 years of experience, as well as a trainer of church leaders across diverse cultural contexts, I have consistently observed a significant deficiency in authentic community. Many individuals frequently transition from one church to another, never settling or establishing a true sense of belonging due to a lack of thoughtful relationships. It is not unusual for people to attend a church for years without genuinely knowing anyone on a meaningful level. Through my work training leaders, I have gathered feedback indicating that most respondents regard the Communion experience as essential to cultivating meaningful connections with God and fellow believers. This book is designed to address our fractured world by guiding pastors, Bible teachers, students, and congregants in rediscovering the vital role of the Lord’s Supper in fostering deep, meaningful community.
